Under “Enable customization when weapon is drawn” I set Cross Hotbar 1 and Cross Hotbar 8 to be the only visible bars.

Under “Enable customization when weapon is sheathed” I set Cross Hotbar 3 to be the only visiblebar.

Under Expanded Hold Controls, I set L2+R2 to show the left half of Cross Hotbar 4 (where I put my healing/emergency spells including Limit Break) and R2+L2 to show the right half of Cross Hotbar 8 (which is where my Egi’s spells get copied to when they get summoned.

Exactly what’s shown differs depending on whether you hold down L2 first or R2.

I turned on Expanded Hold Controls – Expanded Hold Controls will show you half of a cross hotbar when you hold L2 + R2.

The next part of making this work is going into the Character Customization screen for Cross Hotbars in the System menu. Each Summon macro not only calls that particular Egi, but copies their cross hotbar to Cross Hotbar 8. Most of the placement and all of the pet damage spells are on the right side of each bar. Cross Hotbars 5, 6 & 7 are for my Egis – there’s one for Titan, Ifrit and (soon!) Garuda. Cross Hotbar 4 is all my healing/emergency-related spells: Physick, Resurrection (macro’d with Swiftcast), Sustain and Sprint – these are all on the left side of the bar. Cross Hotbar 3 is all my non-battle utility spells. Cross Hotbar 2 has my Summons spells (more on those later). Cross Hotbar 1 has all my damaging spells.

I used a great guide by Bron Al’ moon to layout each bar for my Summoner (the guide is for SCH, SMN and WHM) and, most importantly, for the awesome macro code that lets you copy one hotbar to another.

If you’re interested, here’s how I did it! I did a bit of searching on the web for some guides (there aren’t many…) and spent a solid chunk of time setting it up, and I think I’ve got something that works really well for me.
